Lifestyle tips for boosting immunity


There is well known saying ‘We are what we eat ’. As a nutritionist, I want to create awareness that there is no supplement that can prevent or cure diseases but feeding your body the right way may help keep your immune system strong.

Your first line of defence is to choose a healthy lifestyle. Following general good-health guidelines is the single best step you can take toward naturally keeping your immune system working properly. Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better by healthy living strategies such as these:

  • Have a well-balanced diet that includes all the food groups.

  • Include lots of raw fruits and vegetables in your diet, that provides vitamins that boost immunity.

  • Include Indian spices and herbs in your diet for e.g. turmeric, garlic, ginger. These boots immunity and are anti-bacterial.

  • Be physically active: WHO recommends at least 30-45 mins of physical activity 5 times a week should be included in the routine. Physical activity also increases the level of happy hormones in your body.

  • Maintain a healthy weight for your height. Also, keep a track of your body composition.

  • Get adequate sleep: Get 7-8 hours of sleep because sleeping is the time when heals and your hormones are balanced.

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol.

  • Avoid foods that are high in fats, sugar and salt.

  • Take steps to avoid infection, such as washing your hands frequently and cooking meats thoroughly.

  • Keep current with all recommended vaccines. Vaccines prime your immune system to fight off infections before they take hold in your body.
